Our Bee: Beckett

Groeb Farms would like to introduce you to our bee, "Beckett" and tell you how he was named.

In December 2010, we launched our newly, redesigned website and decided to have a contest
to create “buzz” about our website. Our VP of Technical Services, Joyce Schlatcher, came up
with the idea to let the public name our bee. Through a press release and facebook we
encouraged our friends, family, employees, customers and associates to join in on this great
contest. The winner was offered $500 toward their favorite local Food Bank along with a
surprise gift (cookies and Groeb Farms shirt). E-mails began pouring in and in no time we had
106 different names. These names were then carefully narrowed to 5 names, which were then
put on our website to be voted for. Over 850 people voted and the winning name was “Beckett”.

Our new bee name was submitted by Bob Kern of Hockenberg Newburgh Sales and Marketing
and he donated the $500 to the Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach in Lincoln, Nebraska where
he is an avid volunteer. After hearing about this donation the Peter Kiewit Foundation decided
to match it and turned $500 into $1,000. If this isn’t humanity at its finest we don’t know what is.

Thank you to all that participated and congrats to Bob Kern!

The "BUZZ" about Beckett:

  • The name Beckett is Old English for “bee hive” or “bee cottage”
  • Look to see more of Beckett on our new labels and promotional material
  • Our new Groeb Farms Menu will feature Chef Beckett and delicious honey recipes
